Contrary to popular belief, singing is truly a most natural thing for human beings. We all have this amazing internal instrument which works best when we are relaxed and allows us to generate beautiful natural melodic tones. Our forefathers understood the benefit of singing and sang or chanted whenever possible, people in todays society tend to over think and worry about the prospect of singing, therefore miss the opportunity to benefit from the health and wellbeing power of singing.
As Ella Fitzgerald said” the only thing better than singing is more singing!”
Singing increases health and wellbeing as it:
- Is an aerobic activity that releases endorphins “feel good“ chemicals throughout your body.
- Exercises major muscle groups of the upper body and the cardiovascular system.
- Reduces stress, anxiety and depressive feelings.
- Encourages you to breathe better, increasing oxygen intake and capacity of expiration, leading to increased alertness.
- Improves posture.
- Improves listening skills
- Improves memory retention and recall
- Improves confidence and self esteem.
- Can boost the immune system.
- Can help patients manage chronic pain.
NB Singing alone is good, however singing with others magnifies the stated benefits significantly.
